Created by magician Jim Bodine, Octopalm is the latest accessory for magicians to hit the shelves. Octopalm is a gel substance that, once applied to your skin, makes it possible to stick any lightweight object to the area treated without any stickyness at all.
It can be used to secretly pick up or conceal objects (such as coins) with ease. It can be applied anywhere you wish to hide or hold out an object. It only takes a few minutes to apply and lasts anything from an hour up to a couple of hours depending on how much you use.
The gel does work very well. One issue I have is that is does have a strange smell to it. It’s not overpowering but it is nevertheless odd. Another negative is that to remove the gel you need some kind of paint remover (white spirit, etc). It does wear off by itself eventually, but should you want to remove it before then you will need the paint remover or similar product. I’m not sure how good for your skin it would be to constantly using it to clean your hands?
When you receive your pot of Octopalm you are given a website address and password to access video instructions. This run to 1hr 50mins, where creator Jim is accompanied by Eric Jones. Numerous routines, as well as other applications of Octopalm, are shown and explained. There are several coin routines, a matchbook effect and a dice effect. I did really like the dice effect. Although simple it’s something I am going to have a go at. Also discussed is how you can use the gel to help with dry hands making second deals easier as well as the one handed top palm.
The pot you receive will last a long time. It’s only a small pot but you only need a tiny dab of the gel each time you apply it.
I am still undecided as to whether I would actually use it in performance yet, but it is lots of fun trying out all the things possible with it. And, at just £7.99 it’s very cheap, so if you are not sure if you will use it or not, but just fancy a play around with it, it won’t break the bank.
